An Air Europa flight headed from Madrid to Montevideo was hit by severe turbulence on July 1, injuring 30 passengers. A video of the incident emerged on social media on Tuesday wherein a man can be seen stuck in the overhead luggage compartment.

The viral video begins with the man’s feet hanging out of the luggage compartment. Soon, several co-passengers can be seen helping the man out of the compartment. As the video progresses, the camera captures the aftermath of the turbulence—broken ceiling and luggage compartments.

Sharing the video on X, journalist Sneha Mordani wrote, “Severe turbulence on an Air Europe flight resulted in a passenger being thrown into the overhead luggage compartment, with at least 30 people injured. The plane safely landed in Brazil.”

According to Reuters, flight UX045 made an emergency landing at the Natal Airport in northeastern Brazil at 2:32 a.m. local time, according to local airport operator Zurich Airport Brasil.

“Our flight bound for Montevideo was diverted to Natal due to strong turbulence. The plane landed normally and those injured of varying severity are already being treated,” Air Europa said in a statement on social media.

“This afternoon a plane will take off from Madrid to pick up the passengers and continue the trip to Uruguay. We will expand the information when we have more data,” it added.

In May, a Singapore Airlines flight (SQ321) operating from London to Singapore experienced “severe turbulence”, killing one person and leaving several injured.
