Better Business Bureau urging customers to check coverage details of travel insurance policy | Local News

If you do a lot of traveling for work or for fun, buying travel insurance might be a good idea as long as you know what your policy covers.

Experts say policies may not cover as much as you think.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) says travel insurance policies vary from company to company and may not cover what you think it does.

The coverage is intended to help with unexpected events and not what some insurance providers call an act of God, like forecasted storms.

Make sure you read the fine print and be flexible with travel plans.

If you aren’t sure what your policy covers, you can always give the agency a call to get more details.

“If you’re reading a policy and you’re not sure, call that company and get in writing verification as to what is and what is not covered,” BBB President Michele Mason said. “It’s much better to get that up front than in the end find out you’ve invested money that’s not only going to cause you loss of the extra money that you paid but possibly your whole purchase.”

You can also contact airlines and other travel suppliers before filing a claim to see if those companies offer refunds, waivers, or other accommodations.
