With airlines in the US in the midst of the country’s busiest-ever summer of air travel, some city pairings will see millions of available seats. There are over 720 million seats, domestic and international, scheduled in the US this summer season, of which over 85% will be on domestic routes. But which pairings will have the most seat capacity this summer?
Busiest US domestic routes this summer
According to data from analytics firm OAG, New York is one-half of the top six busiest US domestic routes this summer. In fact, of the top ten busiest routes, NYC fails to appear only twice, with Dallas/Fort Worth-Los Angeles and Las Vegas-Los Angeles coming in seventh and eighth, respectively.

Airlines have currently scheduled a total of 721,651,961 seats for the summer season, with 623,853,291 on domestic flights and the remaining 97,798,670 for international flights. Below are the ten busiest domestic routes in the US as measured by available seats:

Record summer
US airlines are in the middle of a record-breaking summer and are projected to carry over 6% more passengers year-on-year. According to Airlines for America (A4A), US carriers will serve around 271 million passengers between June 1st and August 31st.

The TSA has also forecast a record-breaking Fourth of July travel period, having broken its record for daily passengers screened last month. Despite some worrying signs in late May that the industry was not ready for a surge in travel demand, US carriers are currently coping well.
International selection
New York also makes the top three busiest international routes in the US, and features in six of the top ten busiest. London-New York comes out on top with almost 1.8 million seats, almost double the second-busiest (Paris-New York) at 961,000 seats.

Capacity between North America and Western Europe will be at its highest ever, with almost 140,000 scheduled flights. This is 6% more year-on-year and 8.5% higher than in 2019, with a total of 445 different airport pairings.
